If your stool is frequent and loose then it might be an idea to take a break from food and just drink fluids [not tea or coffee] for a day. It is thought that over cooking white or brown rice until it is a pulp is also easy on the digestion. Rice is a very mild food on the bowel, which is why you will find that on any exclusion diet, rice is still allowed. On top of this, teenagers often find that their parents, and
even their doctors, do not take them seriously when they try to
seek help. The number one complaint I hear from teenagers who
have been diagnosed with IBS, often after many months or years
of asking for help, is that "no-one believed I was sick". This
is horrible for the teenager, as not only do they have the
physical pain and discomfort to deal with, they also have to get
past the fact that everyone around them thinks they are 'faking
it'. Can you imagine anything worse? The best way of gaining knowledge about IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome is by reading as much about it as possible. This can be best done through the Internet.

It seems that the National institute of Health, which is under the National office of Health and Human Services, does indeed initiate large grants to universities and companies to conduct research. The reasons we may not be aware of these research projects might be due to privacy agreements adhered to by the government as well as those entities that apply for the grants to conduct the research. That may also be why these research projects never become media headlines. All the grant hearings and meetings take place behind closed doors. All the information that comes and goes is held in strict adherence to the guidelines as set forth by the Federal Advisory Committee. Their guidelines state that because those that might be involved in the research stand a risk of their private information being made public, grant applications and research project proposals, at least up front are handled behind closed doors. Hi
I've had IBS for about 15 years, so am not going to pretend to have a cure, but I do sympathise with how the pain can make you feel, especially as it's not that easy to talk to other people about!
The way I've approached it is to try and work out what sets the attacks off. Doctors always say stress, and it usually stresses me out completely when they say it, so it's hard to convince them otherwise.
For me it's diet related - I've lived abroad and the UK diet always sets it off when I come home. You could try getting a referal to a dietician, who can help you do an exclusion diet if you think that might help
patient.co.uk seems a good website to start looking for information as they're not trying to sell you something.
best of luck

1. Have you had a definite diagnosis of IBS from your GP?
If not, then you need to see your doctor. It is VERY important to rule out other more serious causes for bowel problems (and yes, sorry, but I do mean cancer).
2. If you have a definite diagnosis of IBS, have you tried Spasmonal (alverine citrate)? Works for some people.
3. Have you considered stress as a possible cause? It very often is the cause. I'm not being flippant here, but I know 3 women who had IBS and it cleared up when they ditched their boyfriends.
I hope everything goes well for you - good luck.

They're starting to recommend that people with IBS, or IBS-like symptoms be tested for celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats). A lot of people with celiac were misdiagnosed as having IBS for years. (18 years for me). It takes an average of 11 years for a person with celiac to be diagnosed.
Here's a webpage by the National Institutes of Health on celiac -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/
And another from the Mayo Clinic -
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/celiac-disease/DS00319
If that starts sounding familiar here are a couple of message boards for people with celiac and other gluten intolerances.

You can also be intolerant to other common foods and get the symptoms you are describing. Soy, corn, eggs, yeast, dairy, etc. You may want to think about keeping a food/symptoms journal and see if you can identify the culprit(s).
I hope you feel better soon.
Nancy
